One of the Pantheons of Oerth

CHARACTER: The Baklunish are a sophisticated, golden-skinned people from the northwest of the Flanaess, renowned for their intellectual traditions, nomadic horse culture, and strong sense of community. They’re typically deeply spiritual, and worship a pantheon which mixes local powers with some more widely-known across Oerth—although these gods tend to adopt local names and identities in Baklun.

The leader of this group of powers is Istus, the mysterious goddess of fate and destiny. Pelor is known here too, as Al’Asran, and Boccob is called Al’Zarad. Geshtai, the power of fresh waters is deeply revered, and Mouqol, while being worshipped mainly in Baklun on Oerth, is known throughout the planes as his realm of trade and commerce the Cafila visits many of the Outer Planes.

Baklunish faiths often revolve around temples and shrines devoted to fate, water, and trade, and their clerics—known as rashaws—possess spell traditions unique to the region, often venerating idols rather than conventional holy symbols.

Sources: Jon Winter-Holt, with many thanks to Talktoh who is far more knowledgeable than me about all things Greyhawk. ‡ Also some great additional homebrew by Don Twistbuck, you can find the details here.

Culturewatch: To help cutters unfamiliar with Greyhawk lore picture these powers, you can do a rough mental translation of these folk to a mixture of Central Asian steppe culture and Middle Eastern traditions. The Baklunish were inspired by historical Arab cultures, medieval Islamic societies, and the nomadic horse tribes of Central Asia such as the Turks and Mongols.
