A Bestiary of Water

Cutter, when you think about it, the Plane of Water poses quite a paradox. Water is the giver of life, essential for virtually all of the races of the Prime and many of the Outer Planes as well. It’s rare to find a puddle of water without something living in it, and places with no water are called deserts because life is vanishingly rare there. Yet at the same time, water is an uncaring agent of drowning, ready to pull he unwary under and snuff out their existence.

The creatures who dwell in the Bottomless Deep embody this paradox too. There are some who are friendly and perhaps even caring—the water wysp, the blessed lifegiver—and there are many who simply seek to ensnare, to smother, and to drown. In fact, there are far too many to talk about here, even in a shorthand form. So, consider this mimir entry a mere reference for all you battlers to know about the especially common, powerful or dangerous dwellers of the Big Tank. I won’t mention the sort of regular fish or octopi that you can find on the Prime, since they’re well known to every sailor. As for the sapient races, I will explain their most renowned holds another time.

Water Elementals

In which is described the many and varied forms which Living Water can take, as the element exemplifies its many various shapes, forms, flavours and temperaments.

Elementaloids of Water

In which we meet creatures not wholly composed of water, but nor are they entirely flesh. Think of them perhaps as planetouched by the element of Water—the aquatic genies, elemental-mortal hybrids, water-infused creatures and true natives of the plane of Water.

Gadabouts of the Inner Planes

Not every creature that dwells in the Inner Planes is composed of a single element. Some beings are planewalking wanderes who’ve made the Inner Planes their home by choice or necessity; others are composites of multiple elements, neither wholly fire nor earth nor air nor water; still others are political operatives, philosophers, or mercenaries whose interests span the whole elemental spectrum. All of these creatures can be found on the Plane of Water occasionally.

The Life Aquatic ( A–K | L-Z coming soon )

In which is described the multitude of sea creatures, sea monsters, sea abominations, and sea humanoids who’ve come to the Bottomless Ocean and decided to settle here for good. Some are recent arrivals, and some have been here for generations, evolving into different beasties entirely than their cousins on the Prime. There are so many of ’em that they’re split into two sections…

Visiting Swimmers (coming soon)

In which we will discuss the myriad of visitors a battler might encounter in the Deep. These cutters are not actually natives, and probably do not dwell on the plane at at, at least not permanently—they are more commonly encountered as they travel through the plane on business mercantile, religious or nefarious.
