Šauška [SHORSH-ka] is a complex power with many interests, forms, and even personalities. As the power of love, they embody the passionate nature of mortals, burning desire and heightened emotions. They are also a power of war, for passions that burn too brightly can easily turn into hatreds and conflict. Yet they are also the power of healing, perhaps to sooth over injuries they may cause in the heat of battle. And finally, related to both love and war, they are a power of fertility, for any cutters killed in battle will need to be replaced, after all. As you can imagine, Šauška is a power who can be invoked in all manner of circumstances.

They are also a power who wears many faces. Typically appearing as an androgynous humanoid lizard wearing bronze armour patterned with symbols of serpents, lions, and doves, representing war, cunning, and peace. They carry a bow that can unleash arrows of both fiery destruction and healing light, and a mirror that reveals hidden truths and desires. When they are not a warrior, Šauška might manifest as a seductive male or female human with long, flowing hair; or a midwife or a medic. Eschewing any single gender or race, Šauška comes and goes as they please, interfering in the lives of mortals as it amuses them.

True strength is forged from love, and tempered in the crucible of battle

Their official role is to maintain the Armoury of the fifth tier of the Throne of Seven Radiances, here they oversee the invention and safekeeping of weapons that embody both elemental fury and healing energies, blessing their champions and delivering retribution to their enemies. They also govern the passions that ignite wars and the mercy that heals wounds. Šauška commands an entourage of radiant war-doves and flame snakes. But their favourite role is to act as a mediator in divine conflicts, using shapeshifting charm, seduction, and cunning to influence outcomes, mend flesh or patch up broken divine relationships.

Šauška forms a curious trinity of powers of love and war with both Inanna of the Sumerian Dingir, and Ishtar of the Babylonian Igigi. While these three powers share a similar portfolio, their outlooks on love and war are quite different. Inanna is fickle and her passions are cold. Ishtar is far less bloodthirsty. Šauška is more impulsive, tending to follow their heart, being quick to start the violence but also quick to kiss and make up, healing wounded bodies and pride without judgement. The three powers may well be aspects of each other, but they can also quarrel and even resort to violence when they meet, despite their deep bonds.
