Yogob Sahkil

The Steed of Betrayal; Frightmare (CR 8); hippophobia — fear of horses; eremophobia — fear of abandonment

Home Planes: Ethereal / Xibalba; Nether

Alignment: Neutral Evil

The yogob [YOGG-ub] is a grotesque mockery of that dependable beast of burden, the humble horse. Superficially a yogob resembled an equine steed, albeit one with seeping abscesses, squid-like tentacles, and teeth like daggers. More nightmarish than an actual nightmare, these vicious fiends feast upon the fear mortals have had since they first domesticated the horse; that the powerful animals they depend upon for survival might turn against them. The yogob feed on anxieties about being trampled, bitten, kicked, or otherwise attacked by animals that possess vastly superior physical strength to their so-called masters.

A favourite trick of yogob is to allow themselves to be summoned by an over-confident conjurer, serve for a while as a faithful steed, and then betray their ‘master’ at the most inopportune time. The creature will deign to serve as a mount for a time, but always with the ultimate goal of either killing its rider or abandoning them somewhere dangerous. They’re able to carry a rider with them when they slip between the Prime and the Ethereal, and they love to use this ability to strand an unsuspecting rider, relishing their fear as they realise they are lost and alone.

Despite their diseased appearance, yogob can be surprisingly graceful. That’s unfortunate really, because this just means they can sneak up on you all the more easily. When they attack, they can use their enormous iron hooves to launch powerful kicks. They can split their ‘head’ into a set of writhing tentacles—all the better to horrify their victims. But the most fearsome weapon of a yogob is its vile breath, which is capable of enervating any sod unlucky enough to breathe in the noxious vapours.

Yogobs enjoy the company of similarly bestial esipils and can summon these lesser sahkils to aid in their hunts. This partnership is particularly effective—while esipils exploit fears of household pets, yogobs focus on larger working animals. Tales are told of a terrifying sahkil mockery of the Wild Hunt which stalks the Deep Ethereal, where a trio of hemnallids ride yogobs, surrounded by a chasing pack of esipils.

Source and Stats: The Creature Codex [PF1e] here

Other Sources: Jon Winter-Holt. Canonwatch: These sahkil are a fabulously horrid type of fiend from Pathfinder lore, who make a great addition to the Ethereal Plane and Planescape lore generally. The Creature Codex has done an awesome job of expanding the number of sahkil massively too, and I’ve included all their creations here. Organising the sahkil into three sub-types based on their hunting style was my idea, because the list was unwieldy and their names are (deliberately) hard to remember, and this splits them up into bite-sized chunks.
