The Sirens of Shame (CR 3); erotophobia — fear of sexual intimacy and lust
The ganerul [gan-eh-ROOL] sahkil are disturbing creatures for sure. They embody the concept of erotophobia, the fear of sexual desire twisted into shame rooted in anxiety and lustful dread. While gorgeously attractive from the waist up, they are hideously malformed below. Their lower halves—I use the pronoun ‘they’ deliberately, because despite appearances, these things do not have a gender as mortals would understand it—is a mass of twitching limbs and tentacles, surrounding a serpent-like tail which ends in a fanged maw. Claws and teeth are their primary weapons, because fortunately most of their appendages are more unsettling than harmful. The bite of a ganerul inflicts a paralysing sense of contrition in their victims, and their gaze can instill crippling fear.
These sahkil are able to shapechange into humanoid forms, allowing them to blend into mortal societies. More worrying, they’re able to mimic people they’ve observed perfectly. They use this ability to trick, seduce and then isolate their victims, weaving around themselves a complex web of allure and deceit. Particularly drawn to societies with strict moral hang-ups about sexuality, the ganerul use their illusory beauty as a weapon to prey on bashers with vulnerabilities surrounding intimacy and self-worth. These sahkil delight in controlling their victims through seduction, jealousy, and blackmail, feeding on the psychological trauma this creates. A single ganerul may string along a number of berks, working to erode their confidence and generate festering regret and shame. They are true masters of the intimate fears that mortals can hide, even from themselves.
Source and Stats: The Creature Codex [PF1e] here
Other Sources: Jon Winter-Holt. Canonwatch: These sahkil are a fabulously horrid type of fiend from Pathfinder lore, who make a great addition to the Ethereal Plane and Planescape lore generally. The Creature Codex has done an awesome job of expanding the number of sahkil massively too, and I’ve included all their creations here. Organising the sahkil into three sub-types based on their hunting style was my idea, because the list was unwieldy and their names are (deliberately) hard to remember, and this splits them up into bite-sized chunks.
