Creatures of the Abyss

A Mimir’s Bestiary of the Abyss

These are all creatures presented for the first time on this website, or that have been refreshed, converted or summarised from canonical or non-canonical planar materials.

Native Creatures of the Abyss

This is a list of creatures from AD&D 2e and Pathfinder 1e rules which could be useful for adventures in the Abyss, split into the various awful races of native outsiders of the plane, and the final list is general monstrosities that a lucky cutter won’t meet in the Abyss.

Abyssal Lords

  • Dagon [Bestiary 3, PF1e]
  • Kostchtchie [Bestiary 3, PF1e]
  • Pazuzu [Bestiary 3, PF1e]
  • This list is very incomplete — I’ll be working on it…

Great Old Ones

Great Old Ones: Unknowable horror. Monstrosities from outside of reality itself. Motivations unknown but suspected to be aiming to rent asunder the boundaries of reality.

Lou-mara

Lou-māra: Possession, madness. A newly emerging form of demon, presently mainly formless and incorporeal. They are relatively unknown at the moment but growing in power. Some say they have slipped through the Abyssal rift from a dimension of pure thought and are learning to master the new playground in the dimensions of space and time. Others say they were spawned when the Abyss digested a pantheon of psychic gods and birthed the loumara.

  • Bodak
  • Caller in darkness
  • Caligrosto
  • Dybbuk
  • Guecubu
  • Manitou
  • Shadow fiend/demon

Obyrith

Obyrith: Dark secrecy, struggle, annihilation. The obyrith are demons from an alternative dimensions, where they consumed all of their universe and had to find another. They hide in (often in plain sight) amongst the tanar’ri, who fear and hate them, and conduct a guerrilla war with them. The obyrith are extremely secretive and manipulative.

  • Draudnu
  • Golothoma
  • Laghathti
  • Uzollru
  • Verakia

Qlippoth

Qlippoth: Mindless destruction. The original spawn of the Abyss, these creatures appeared before there was intelligence or belief on the Prime and are not shaped by mortal minds. Even the tanar’ri fear them, and they expend great energies to keep the qlippoth at bay and isolated in the deep dark places.

Tanar’ri

Tanar’ri: Anger, cruelty, domination. The most numerous of the Abyssal outsiders, locked in a Blood War with the baatezu, a guerrilla war with the obyrith, a genocidal war against the qlippoth and civil war amongst themselves. According to yugoloth legends, the tanar’ri were created by the ancient yugoloth, but this is probably a lie.

Source: Jon Winter-Holt. If you have ideas for lists of creatures for other editions of D&D or Pathfinder, please let me know! NB: I took some liberties re-assigning some monsters to outsider races that don’t necessarily exist in the source they came from. Suggesting that bebilith might be a type of qlippoth, for example. See what you think!
