The Shimmering River

The Shimmering River in Lunia

Location: Mount Celestia / Lunia / Threshold

The Shimmering River is a radiant ribbon of liquid starlight that winds its way through the lower four layers of Mount Celestia, connecting Lunia to Solania, via Venya and Mercuria. The waters glint just like the scales of the great dragon Bahamut, and it’s no coincidence that he is also the patron of the river. It’s said the waterway mirrors his moods too. Usually the flow is relaxed and pleasant, but occasionally it can churn up into angry white water. When that happens it’s not like a Prime river where the choppy parts are in isolate rocky regions, at once the whole river becomes riled up and dangerous to navigate. They say that’s when Bahamut is on the warpath, angling to smite some evil-doer or other. Fortunately that happens only rarely, and for the most part, it’s a safe stream to sail.

Chant goes that the water itself has been blessed by the Dracopaladin too. Some cutters even reckon that the river’s glimmering sheen is a result of fragments of Bahamut’s scales that have floated downstream from his Palace and lodged amongst rocks. These tales have started more than one get-rich-quick scheme where prospecting planewalkers descended upon the Shimmering River panning for dragonscale fragments and generally making a mess of the pristine environment. Such scales would be valuable commodities in Sigil—and banned in some Lower Planar locales like theMarket of Breaths in Dis, which of course only inflates their value even higher. When the only danger is piking off some archons, a gambling cutter might make the calculation it’s worth the risk. Clearly, they’ve never come across some of Celestia’s more fearsome archonic congregations.

Along the shores of this waterway, you’ll find numerous small villages. These settlements are typically inhabited by draconic or reptilian peoples, as well as more dragon-blooded sorcerers than you might expect. There’s probably something in the water after all, eh? Planewalkers might also be surprised to find a community of kobold petitioners here. It turns out the little pikes aren’t always rapaciously sneaky, and there are enough (admittedly now dead) noble hearted kobolds that make it at a Celestian afterlife to establish a monastery called the Platinum Heart. You really must try the shimmering ale that they brew.

Further upstream the river runs alongside, through or around the Palace of Bahamut in all its incarnations, connecting all four of them as it traces the long route from its headwaters in Solania down through Venya, Mercuria, and then finally to Lunia where it spills its radiant waters into the Bay of Light.

Luminarial Dragonflies

All kinds of aquatic critters call the fresh waters home. Luminarials are silver dragonflies with translucent metal wings that catch the moonlight and shimmer with iridescent hues. They flit just above the water’s surface, guiding boats with their soothing glow. Giant celestial turtles have markings on their shells that match the constellations, and can serve as fortune tellers if you pay them with tasty morsels. Lantern archons are also drawn to the Shimmering River. These small celestials radiate a soft, warm light, and you can see them dance gracefully with the luminarials above the waters in the eternal moonlit night.

The Shimmering River is also home to navigators and fisherfolk, although not all of them are what you’d expect. Take for instance the tale of Seraphel the Boatman (planar petitioner [he/him / LG), a fromer trumpet archon. Once Seraphel was a Herald of the Host, announcing the word of the powers when important proclamations needed to be spread. His music carried the weight of authority, and yet amidst all the pomp and grandeur, Seraphel found himself yearning for a simpler, more humble afterlife.

One radiant night as he stood on the shores of the Shimmering River, he felt the pull of the river’s current as it gently lapped at his feet. It was in that moment that Seraphel thought he heard a watery whisper, a urging that spoke of a different kind of service, an altogether more modest calling.

Seraphel the River Boatman

And so Seraphel laid down his herald’s trumpet, armour and wings, and embraced the simply life of simple petitioner. He became the Ferryman of the Shimmering River, guiding souls along and across its waters in an ordinary wooden boat. He still makes music of course, but his melodies now serve as songs of comfort and solace, gentle lullabies to entertain and sooth cutters who embark on long journeys.

No longer announcing grand proclamations for high-ups, Seraphel instead found fulfilment in the quiet moments on the river, the stories shared between those he ferries, and the glimmers of wonder in their eyes as they take in the beauty around them. He truly enjoys these more intimate kinds of connections, and knows in his heart that he is still serving a higher purpose as a reminder that even the most majestic beings can find true meaning in humility. And so, the tale of Seraphel the Boatman is a lesson in the importance of choice, and the satisfaction that can be found in the simplest of acts.
