Vlogar Sahkil

The Lurking Gaze (CR 3); scopophobia — fear of being stared at

Home Planes: Ethereal / Xibalba; Nether

Alignment: Neutral Evil

A vlogar [vlow-GAR] is a nightmarish, hunched humanoid with pebbly skin that subtly shifts in colour and hue, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings like some kind of nightmarish chameleon. Its hands and feet end in sharp claws, which it uses to scuttle along walls and even ceilings, for it moves with an unsettling, animalistic grace on all fours. The creature’s face is frozen in a grotesque rictus, its oval mouth stretching wide to reveal a long, prehensile tongue that lashes and coils obscenely. Vlogars are rarely seen unless they wish to be seen—as masters of stealth and camouflage, their shifting skin and expert climbing skills let them vanish into the shadows almost at will, only to reappear in the periphery of their victims’ vision. Deliberately of course—all the better to strike delicious fear into them.

Vlogars embody the horror of scopophobia—the fear of being watched—and they wield this terror both as voyeurs and as the lurking shape in the gloom. They delight in the psychological torment of their victims, inflicting their hideous unblinking gaze just long enough to instill paranoia before disappearing again, leaving their prey with the lingering certainty that they are not alone. Vlogars also enjoy encouraging and manipulating mortals with voyeuristic tendencies, driving them toward obsession and even darker acts. Given the option though, rather than engaging in direct violence themselves, they leave it to more powerful sahkils, watching ominously from the shadows. When forced into direct combat, their preferred method of attack is from behind with their long tongues, which are able to magically silence their victims. Striking unseen and dragging off victims, they seek to remove the weakest members of a group one at a time, leaving the others terrified and jumping at their own shadows. The greatest pleasure of a vlogar is in the psychological unraveling of their targets—turning the fear of being watched into an all-consuming, inescapable nightmare.

Source and Stats: The Creature Codex [PF1e] here

Other Sources: Jon Winter-Holt. Canonwatch: The sahkil are a fabulously horrid type of fiend from Pathfinder lore, who make a great addition to the Ethereal Plane and Planescape lore generally. The Creature Codex has done an awesome job of expanding the number of sahkil massively too, and I’ve included all their creations here. Organising the sahkil into three sub-types based on their hunting style was my idea, because the list was unwieldy and their names are (deliberately) hard to remember, and this splits them up into bite-sized chunks.
