Thyrlien Eladrin

Also known as Midnight Azata
Who Make Safe the Danger of Darkness
CG; CR 4
Alternate form: A purple luminescent bat
DESCRIPTION: The thyrlien (theer-LEE-en) are small, faerie-fey humanoids standing just two feet tall and weighing around 15 pounds. These diminutive eladrin are coloured in subtle shades of gray, giving them a twilight aesthetic perfectly suited to their nocturnal habits. They have delicate-looking wings decorated with coloured motes that resemble a starry night sky, inspired by the beauty of Desna’s celestial domain—for they are servants of Lady Luck. Despite their fragile appearance, thyrlien wings are surprisingly sturdy—as stiff as wood with razor-sharp edges that serve as dangerous weapons. These eladrin appear playful and unserious, but their innocent demeanor gives way to a surprising ferocity during combat. Opponents are particularly surprised by their venomous bite.
HABITAT: Like other celestial eladrin, thyrliens originate from Arborea, and can be found on all layers of the plane, especially after dark when they emerge from their hiding places to frolic in the twilight. However, as servants of Desna, they frequently travel between planes, spending considerable time on the Prime where they patrol lonely midnight roads and dark alleys. Unlike most eladrin who prefer to surround themselves with natural paradise, thyrliens deliberately seek out ominous spots—desolate highways, shadowy urban wastelands, and remote paths where night travellers are most vulnerable. They’re specifically drawn to areas where the servants of Lamashtu or Ghlaunder might hunt, making themselves guardians of some of civilisation’s darkest corners.
PHILOSOPHY/SOCIETY: Thyrliens embody Desna’s philosophy of protecting freedom through the night hours. Chant goes they were created specifically as more militant counterparts to the gentler coure, with whom they get on extremely well. Their philosophy centers on proactive protection—rather than waiting for evil to strike, they actively hunt the servants of darkness, deliberately putting themselves in harm’s way. They believe that true freedom requires vigilant guardians to make it possible, especially during the dark hours when most cutters are defenseless against supernatural predators.
AESTETICA: The thyrlien’s aesthetic is a homage to Lady Luck. Their starfield wing pattern mimics the constellations of the Prime world they have been tasked with defending, and their small stature allows them to move undetected through the shadows where evil lurks. Unlike the bright, musical coure who bring joy and song to travel, thyrliens are a more subdued, watchful presence—they are the quiet sentinels of the night rather than its troubadors.
COMBAT: Thyrliens are strongest when in the embrace of darkness, being able to regenerate damage when under a night sky. Their little sharp teeth deliver a strength-sapping poison, which they use to weaken their foes. Unlike some more gentle eladrin, the thyrlien show up expecting trouble. They are excellent trackers, particularly when hunting the servants of Lamashtu or Ghlaunder.
However, their most infamous ability is called the starlight blast, and unleashes holy twilight. This causes damage to creatures who are not as freedom-loving as the eladrin, be that because of morality or ethics. The more a target’s alignment deviates from chaotic good, the more they are impacted by the blast—Desna tolerates neither rapacious evil nor oppressive conformity.
