Ahvothian

A vicious ahvothian

Home Plane: Abyss / Layer 90 / Ahvoth-Kor, the Guttering Grove

Alignment: Chaotic Evil

Themes: Saurian fiends who embody the savage hunt—where only the strongest, most cunning predators survive

Philosophy: The ahvothians are a grotesque fusion of fiendish malice and prehistoric savagery. They combine the worst aspects of both demon and dinosaur. Roughly human-sized, they are built with the predatory grace of a velociraptor, crossed with the crushing power of a sauropod. Their narrow skulls bristle with razor-sharp teeth designed for tearing flesh, while their eyes burn with an intelligence far more cunning than a mere beast. The stench of rotting vegetation mixed with the copper tang of fresh blood surrounds them. Their voices carry the bone-deep rumble of distant thunder and the hissing sibilance of serpents.

What makes ahvothians terrifying isn’t just their physical prowess mind, it’s that coupled with their violent philosophy. They believe the multiverse is nothing more than an endless hunting ground, where the weak exist solely to feed the strong, and where showing mercy is the greatest weakness a being can commit. Unlike other fiends who might corrupt through temptation or dominate through fear, ahvothians embody pure predatory instinct, elevated to a cosmic principle. They hunt not for sustenance, but to prove their superiority over all other forms of life, arrogantly viewing themselves as the apex predators that the multiverse was destined to produce. Each ahvothian keeps a treasured stash of mementos from previous kills, obsessing over them. They’re able to use the inherent magic in these wicked trophies to intimidate opponents. Like mortal rangers, ahvothians each have a favourite quarry, and they will attack these unlucky beings even more ferociously than usual.

In the Abyss, the ahvothian show what the natural world would becomes if stripped of any compassion and balance, leaving only the endless, bloody cycle of hunt and kill. When one of these fiends manages to escape the Abyss and end up on the Prime, they typically gather a herd of carnivorous dinosaurs around them—while they are not particularly intelligent fiends, when commanding saurian minions they can be surprisingly tactical.
