Kornath the Persistent

Planar ramadeen paragon of subtlety and gradual persuasion [he/him] / LG

Kornath earned his title through centuries of patient work with a single target—a particularly ancient and cruel osyluth baatezu named Xarthraxis (planar osyluth baatezu [he/him / LE) who served as a torture master in the depths of Baator. For over three hundred years, Kornath maintained a subtle communication with this fiend, beginning with philosophical debates that gradually introduced concepts of mercy. Most celestials considered his effort hopeless, but after his capture and first hand experience, Kornath believed he’d detected the faintest resonance with the concept of aesthetic restraint in torture, that he felt could be nurtured into something more.

In the 331st year of their correspondence, Xarthraxis committed his first act of mercy, sparing a soul whose cries reminded him of concepts Kornath had shared. Over the next century, these moments of restraint grew more frequent, eventually drawing the attention of his infernal superiors. When Xarthraxis was scheduled for destruction for his “weakness,” Kornath led an unprecedented extraction mission into Baator itself, rescuing the baatezu moments before the moment of his scheduled destruction.

Xarthraxis underwent the painful transformation from baatezu to celestial over the course of fifty years, eventually becoming a unique reformed osyluth that now works alongside Kornath. Together they specialize in the most difficult redemption cases in the multiverse, operating on timeframes that span centuries. Kornath’s horns have developed a silver ridge, something previously unknown among ramadeen, believed to represent his discovery of a new kind of forgiveness
