I Should’ve been a Devil
I flew so high on wings of light, chased every noble fight,
Worked hard to earn this halo, now I’m shining day and night.
But here in Elysium, where the light never dies,
I find myself wondering ’bout the paths I never tried
Oh I should’ve been a devil, ridin’ through the fiery plane,
Flingin’ fireballs and brandishin’ a wicked chain.
Stealin’ hearts and wagin’ wars, livin’ wild and free,
I should’ve been a devil, oh, that should’ve been me.
I followed every rule and vow, stayed on the righteous track,
Earned my wings and halo, now there’s no turning back.
But as I play my golden harp under skies so fair and blue,
I hear baatezu laughter and I wonder what I’d do.
I should’ve been a devil, ridin’ nightmares through the planes,
Flingin’ fireballs and crushing tanar’ri brains.
Stealin’ souls in the Bloody War, livin’ wild and free,
I should’ve been a devil, just like old Beelzee!
Imagine all the battles, the schemes and wicked plans,
Rampaging through Avernus, feeling fire on my hands.
But here I am in Paradise, with peace and endless song,
Yet a shadow on my soul tells me I don’t belong.
I should’ve been a devil, marchin’ through the Lower Planes,
Flingin’ fireballs and killin’ dretch and manes,
Stealin’ hearts and wagin’ wars, livin’ wild and free,
I should’ve been a devil, or perhaps a tanar’ri!
So I guess I’ll keep on shining, in this perfect, gentle light,
But my heart will always wander through the endless astral night.
For baatezu’s freedom, I’ll forever crave,
I should’ve been a devil, livin’ afterlives depraved.
